Annotations for Jodie steele dominic andersen christopher chung and original west end cast of heathers yo girl

Lyric: ...‘Everything’?
Annotation:
Veronica is currently worried that the “everything” in question is what J.D, and therefore Veronica, did to Heather Chandler, Kurt, and Ram.

Lyric: Now -
Annotation:
In the cast recording, the lyrics are instead “Still you’ve earned that red scrunchie” speaking about how because she’s hurt Martha, she’s earned Heather’s red scrunchie.

Lyric: What’s -
 That -
 Brimstoney smell?
Annotation:
That “brimstoney smell” is foreshadowing. Brimstone is associated with sulfur, fire, and lightning striking, foreshadowing JD blowing up the school.

Lyric: TOO LATE!
 He got in!
Annotation:
There is a crescendo on too late, and then a drop to a whisper, as the tension is over.

Lyric: [HEATHER CHANDLER, RAM AND KURT]
Veronica’s running on, running on fumes now
 Veronica’s totally fried
Veronica’s gotta be tripping on ‘shrooms now
 Thinking that she can hide
Veronica’s done for, there’s no doubt now
 Notify next of kin!
Veronica’s trying to keep him out now
Annotation:
The spirits sing this verse in the same melody as the following song, Meant To Be Yours. Specifically the part where J.D says: Veronica! Open the, open the door please! Veronica open the door! (And so on)

Lyric: Guess who’s right down the block

 [VERONICA, spoken]
You’re sending me to a shrink?!

 [HEATHER CHANDLER, RAM AND KURT]
 Guess who’s climbing the stairs

 [VERONICA’S MOM, spoken]
There’s no shame in getting some help

 [HEATHER CHANDLER, RAM AND KURT]
 Guess who’s picking your lock

 [VERONICA, spoken]
 I am not the problem!

 [HEATHER CHANDLER, RAM AND KURT]
Time’s up! Go say your prayers!
Annotation:
Chandler’s, Kurt, and Ram’s ghost begin to speed up while singing this, showing Veronica’s anxiety in this situation. Also, Veronica’s lines between her and her parents have changed from the World Premiere Recording. Now, instead of them trying to “comfort” Veronica, they are telling her about her new doctor, which she denies needing

Lyric: Come-
 Join -
 Heather in hell!
Annotation:
Veronica and JD continue to talk about the people they kill being in heaven: ‘The only place where Heathers and Marthas can truly get along is in Heaven’ and ‘Say “Hi” to God’ However everyone’s actions would suggest the other extreme. The ghosts of Veronica’s mistakes make it clear where Heather actually wound up and where Veronica and JD will too.

Lyric: Now -
 You’re -
 Truly a Heather
Annotation:
It is interesting that this behavior is associated with being a ‘Heather’. In the show we consistently see the Heathers being cruel but never as malicious and conniving as Veronica and JD have been. Together they have killed 3 students and had two others attempt suicide which can be tied back to them. While we see Heather Duke minimizing and encouraging suicide she’s never murdered. Veronica is not only ‘Truly a Heather’ she has transcended them in cruelty.

Lyric: He even showed us your copy of Moby Dick!
Annotation:
In the film, JD highlights things in Heather Duke’s copy of Moby Dick before he plans to kill her. This is clearly a reference to that.

Lyric: Earned that red scrunchie
Annotation:
The red scrunchie is like a crown in this musical’s monarchy; it was passed from the queen, cruel Heather Chandler, to mean Heather Duke, and now Heather Chandler is now saying Veronica is heartless enough to have it.

Lyric: Yet another geek trying to imitate the popular people and failing, big time
Annotation:
Suicide is now a ‘trend’ with the popular kids (Heather Chandler, Ram and Kurt were believed to had all killed themselves and Heather Macnamara tried to.) This also shows how heartless Heather Duke is, mocking someone who was depressed enough to try and end their life.

Lyric: Oh my God. Is she alive?
Annotation:
Veronica still cares about Martha; they were best friends and she finally realises that she does want to be her friend again.

Lyric: Sorry to come in through the window
 Dreadful etiquette, I know!
Annotation:
This is the callback to the original Heathers movie, in which JD says this line when he sneaks into Veronica’s house after the big frat party and they play strip croquet. Also in, “Dead Girl Walking”, Veronica breaks into JD’s window.

Lyric: This is not my handwriting!
Annotation:
The change from “He’s got your handwriting down cold” to “This is not my handwriting” suggests Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer’s negligence towards their daughter until fear takes hold of them.
